AFNGO’s vision is to promote prosperous life, which emphasizes environmental and ecological rights protection and sustainable development. AFNGO's mission is to protect and develop Armenia’s nature: forests, landscapes, water and air, biodiversity for current and future generations. The organization’s objectives include also increasing, public participation and civic activism among the population, awareness raising, advocacy,lobbying, promotion of healthy living and healthy environment, ecological education, protection of Human Rights and awareness raising. As a means of reclaiming, protecting, and expanding forested areas, Armenian Forests NGO involves individuals, communities, other NGOs, government, and businesses in a variety of solutions on multiple fronts including changes in policies, norms of thinking and action, economic improvement, public education, and media advocacy (see our “Approach” and “Actions” pages for more details). Mission: To protect and restore Armenia’s forests for current and future generations.

We aim to address the root causes of deforestation, including the demand for cheap fuel, lack of affordable alternative energy, inadequate policies, corruption, and insufficient enforcement.

Armenian Forests NGO seeks the following objectives for Armenia:

  • Protection of forested areas
  • Expansion of healthy forest areas
  • Transition to sustainable forest management

Armenian Forests NGO works through a broad-based approach to accomplish its goals, including:

  • Supporting alternative energy to reduce the demand for wood as fuel
  • Attracting investment and funding to emphasize protection of natural resources
  • Developing and implementing models of local reforestation and stewardship
  • Conducting public education and outreach through the news media
  • Supporting reforestation, protection, and stewardship of natural resources
  • Advocating for local and national policies aligned with international covenants
  • Supervising the restoration of 1200 hectares of degraded forests in Tavoush and Lori Marzes.
  • Advancing reforestation projects and nurseries in Kotayk, Sevan National Park, Aragatsotn, Lori, Syunik, and Yerevan.
  • Building support to curb illegal logging and promote mass reforestation through media coverage and lobbying.
  • Developing a fruit garden to create jobs and generate income for reforestation efforts.
  • Engaging communities and experts to develop regulations for the national forest code.
  • Training and supporting local NGOs to involve youth in environmental protection.
  • Leading coalition actions with local and international organizations to protect Armenia’s environment.
